NE parties join hands to oppose Citizenship bill

In a show of solidarity, 11 political parties, including 10 from the Northeast, today (Jan 29) joined hands and resolved to continue opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and also meet President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urge them to scrap the legislation that has already been passed by Lok Sabha and is likely to be tabled in upper house of Parliament in the upcoming Budget Session.

The parties — AGP, NPP, MNF, NPF, NDPP, PDF, UDP, HSPDP, KHNAM, IPFT and the JD (U) — met in Guwahati and resolved to continue opposing the citizenship bill. Key leaders who took part in the meeting today were Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and several senior leaders of the AGP, including party president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta.

“We have joined hands to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and have taken a few resolutions that include calling on President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asking them to scrap the legislation,” Sangma said.

The forum also resolved to meet again in the coming days to chalk out its next course of action in the event of the government going forward with the legislation.
