GUWAHATI, Dec 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today tabled the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha as protests by groups in Assam and the Northeast continued.
The bill will be taken up for voting in the house later today.
The BJP has already issued a three-line whip to its MPs, asking them to be present in Parliament from today till Dec 12 so as to ensure passage of the legislation in both houses of Parliament.
The bill is expected to have a smooth sailing in Lok Sabha where the BJP-led NDA enjoys a majority. The bill, once passed by the lower house, is expected to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (Dec 11).
Meanwhile, protests by various groups and organization continue across Assam with the AASU, the AJYCP, and other student bodies upping the ante and taking out protest rallies, staging road blockades and squatting on railway tracks.
Activists of various student bodies also protested in front of the residences of several ruling coalition MLAs. Activists and organizations opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 protested outside the residences of Tinsukia BJP MLA Sanjay Kishan, Teok AGP MLA Renupoma Rajkhowa, newly-elected Sonari BJP MLA Nabanita Handique and other leaders.
