Assam Govt to give land ownership rights to 1 lakh Indigenous families

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Good news for the indigenous people of Assam as the BJP-led government has decided to provide land ownership rights to over 1 lakh families.

In the current financial year Assam government is gearing-up for this process and order has been passed to several deputy commissioners of several districts by the state revenue department to initialise the process.

As per Assam Revenue Minister, Bhabesh Kalita, around 13 thousand indigenous families have already been provided with land ownership rights. And in November, after the bypolls, in the second round, another 44 thousand families will be provided with land ownership rights.

One of the main promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party government was to provide land rights to those indigenous people residing in the state without any land rights. Over the past 3 years this issue got delayed due to the NRC process.

Once the processes are completed by the deputy commissioners of the said districts, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal will provide the land ownership rights to these families.

It is to be noted that many indigenous families in upper Assam have been residing without land ownership rights for many years now.  The maximum number of beneficiaries in the month of November would be from upper Assam. Some other districts where indigenous people will get land rights are Nagaon, Darrang, Hojai, Kamrup and Barpeta.
