Assam Health Department refers 10 more children for Congenital Heart Disease surgery

GUWAHATI: On Wednesday the Assam Health Department referred 10 more children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) for surgery to Narayan Hrudalaya in Bengaluru. This was stated by Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma through his twitter handle.

The Assam Government and the National Health Mission have been providing new lives to children of Assam born with CHD. Under the Congenital Heart Disease Scheme of Assam Government 7550 children with CHD have been successfully treated through surgery. In Southeast Asia this is the highest success rate reported so far.  The treatment has now been included in the Atal Amrit Abhiyan Scheme as well. Approximately 9 children in 1000 are born with a congenital heart defect.

A congenital heart defect (CHD), also known as a congenital heart anomaly or congenital heart disease, is a problem in the structure of the heart that is present at birth. Approximately 9 children in 1000 are born with a congenital heart defect. The cost of treatment is very high.
