GUWAHATI, Jan 16: Emotional scenes at Merapani in Assam’s Golaghat district after Simanta Saikia, a member of a fishing vessel who spent more than a year in a Pakistan prison, returned home.
Simanta along with other Indian fishermen were arrested by the Maritime Security Agency of Pakistan on Oct 28 last year after their boat strayed into waters of the neighbouring country. They were lodged in Landhi jail in Karachi.
He was among the 20 persons released by Pakistan on Jan 5.
Meanwhile, there were jubilant scenes at Simanta’s home village after he reached home this evening.
“I am very happy to be home, finally. I am overjoyed after meeting my parents, my wife and my one-year-old son whom I had not seen since he was born after I was captured by Pakistani authorities,” Simanta told News Live.
He also narrated how he and other Indian prisoners were treated at the prison in Lahore.
“We were treated very badly by the Pakistani authorities. The quality of food was very poor,” he said.
