Basic points: NRC for Assam to be published on August 31
Guwahati: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam will be published on August 31, Saturday.
> Non-inclusion of name in the NRC does not make someone a foreigner.
> People whose names are not in the NRC will not be detained under any circumstances.
> Detention comes into force only after the Foreigners’ Tribunals declare someone as a foreigner.
> A person can be declared as a foreigner only by the Foreigners’ Tribunal.
> Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP Government has stated that it will provide free legal aid to people in need whose names are not in the NRC.
> Assam’s two main political parties — BJP and Congress — have also promised to help those people who are left out of the final NRC.
> The government is making necessary arrangements to provide adequate legal help free of cost to people through District Legal Services Authorities.
>The free legal services include: fees for processing, drafting, typing, clerkage and remuneration of lawyers empanelled with the state legal service authority.
