Legendary singer-music composer Bhupen Hazarika was posthumously honoured with the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, at a function held at Rastrapati Bhavan today evening (Aug 8).
President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the award that was received by his son Tej Hazarika in the presence of several other members of the legendary balladeer’s family.

Popularly known as Xudhakantha meaning the nightingale, Dr Hazarika becomes the second Assamese after Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi to receive the Bharat Ratna.
Born at Sadia on September 8, 1926, Dr Bhupen Hazarika passed away on Nov 5, 2011. He was also conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India.
Along with Bhupen Hazarika, President Kovind also conferred the country’s highest civilian award on former President Pranab Mukherjee and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously).
