Bhubaneswar Kalita quits Congress over party’s stand on Kashmir

PUBLISHED:

Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita has resigned from the Congress party after quitting as a Rajya Sabha MP. Kalita, who has been a four-term Rajya Sabha MP besides being a former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet and a former MLA, said he had resigned from Rajya Sabha opposing the party’s stand on the Kashmir developments, including the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A.

Kalita says he had sent his resignation letter to the Congress high command Monday evening after the party leadership did not contact him after he resigned as Rajya Sabha MP.

“I had resigned as Rajya Sabha MP over the party’s stand on abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir. But I had not resigned from the party. However, after I felt party leaders were snubbing me, I sent my resignation letter to the Congress high command in the evening,” Kalita, a former cabinet minister in Assam, told News Live today.

Kalita, who was the chief whip of the party in the upper house of Parliament, has resigned nearly a year prior to the end of his present term as Rajya Sabha MP.
