Guwahati: The report of the High Power Committee formed to give recommendations for implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord will be formally handed over to the Assam Government on February 25th, said sources.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah entrusted Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to receive the report of the High Power Committee.

Highly placed sources told Northeast live that the Union Home Minister had a brief discussion on the matter with Sonowal when the latter received him at the Lilabari airport on his way to Itanagar for the Arunachal statehood celebrations.

The 14 member Central govt appointed High Powered Committee headed by Justice retired Biplab Kumar Sarma had completed the report along with signatures by members on February 10. The committee’s term expired on 15th February.

Apart from defining the term Assamese people, as mentioned in the Assam accord, the committee in its report running into more than 170 pages has forwarded several recommendations including reservation of seats in the state Assembly and parliament for the indigenous people of the state.

Sources said the committee has also proposed an upper house beside stipulating reservation in both central and state govt jobs.

The Committee has also recommended a slew of measures to protect the Assamese language and culture. (Northeast Live)
