GUWAHATI: With torrential rains already lashing most parts of Assam, the Kaziranga National Park in Golaghat district has been affected by rainwater. Due to the heavy downpour for the past few days, the National Highway 37 that touches the southern boundary of the park has started submerging in floodwaters.
Moreover, water coming down from the Karbi Anglong Hills which is on the other side of Panbari’s NH37 is causing this sudden flash flood on the roads. The continuous heavy downpour and the flood in NH37 have severely affected the communication routes connecting Upper Assam to Lower Assam.
“Due to the prolonging rainfall the water flowing from the Karbi hills to the highways is causing too much difficulty for us to drive around with tourists. On the other hand, NEEPCO has released water from Ranganodi Dam which is also one of the reasons behind these flash floods,” said a driver of a tourist vehicle.
“There is a forecast of heavy rainfall in the next 5 days. It seems the water level is rising on the roads. The government needs to work on the systems of the drainage and take adequate measures to control such flood situations,” said a tourist.
A local resident said, “I urge the Assam government to look into the matter. Due to negligence, this rainfall has caused floods on the national highways. The road ministry should take steps to improve the conditions of the roads.”
The Regional Meteorology Centre located in Guwahati has warned maximum possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall for Assam in the coming days.
