Indigenous Assamese should also provide pre-1951 documents: Aminul Islam

Guwahati: A few days ago the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam’s controversial statement that Ahoms are not indigenous people of Assam created a stir all over Assam. Later, the Dhing legislator sought apology for insulting the Ahom community.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has again made another controversial statement against the indigenous people who bear the surnames of Deka, Konwar, Hazarika, Saikia, Gogoi, Bodo, Karbi and Bordoloi while he was addressing a rally in Bechamari, Dhing, Assam.

“The Muslims of Assam are ready to accept 1951 as the cut-off-year for the NRC. And we are ready to submit all the documents to prove ourselves as indigenous people of Assam. But if all the Muslims are ready to show their documents then other tribes, who consider themselves to be the indigenous people of Assam must also submit their documents of before 1951, or else, we won’t accept 1951 as the base year for NRC,” said Aminul Islam.

He also added, “People who bear the surnames of Deka, Konwar, Hazarika, Saikia, Gogoi, Bodo , Karbi and Bordoloi must also submit their valid documents before 1951 or else we won’t accept 1951 as the base year for NRC. Because Hindu Bangladeshi’s can take up these surnames very easily and prove themselves to be the indigenous people of Assam”.
