Irrigation scam: Former Congress MLA Enamul Haque Laskar arrested by CID

GUWAHATI: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Former Congress MLA Enamul Haque Laskar on corruption charges. Haque had earlier represented the Sonai legislative assembly. The arrest has been made in connection with the Rs. 270 crore irrigation scam. Laskar has been arrested as one of the main accused in the case. 

The CID arrested the former Congress MLA based based on an ongoing case at the High Court. A suicide note in 2012 by Mathur Chandra Nath had mentioned Laskar’s name and an FIR was lodged in Tezpur but the investigation was not done properly. Laskar was acting as OSD of the department during that time. Later the Gauhati High Court taking suo motu cognisance ordered the CID to look into the case. Based on this the CID on Monday evening arrested Laskar. He is now lodged at the Tezpur jail. 

“They have said that my name has been mentioned in the suicide note of Mathur Chandra Nath. Allegations have been made that money was been given to five people by this man to give me. Neither the work was been allotted nor the money was returned. I have not taken any money and I don’t know these people,” said Laskar to mediapersons.“He has been arrested as there was a case against him at the Tezpur Police Station. This case was lodged by one Prasanta Nath whose father Mathur Chandra Nath was working at that time in Udalguri and was compelled to take his own life. In his suicide note Nath had stated that he had taken Rs. 26 lakh from five individuals to get work for his son. This money was then forwarded through three middlemen to Enamul Haque Laskar who was OSD at that time. This suicide note has been verified and based on it Haque has been arrested as a main accused,” said an investigating officer to the media.
