GUWAHATI, Dec 25: The Assam Government respects and will never oppose democratic and peaceful protests but will not allow miscreants to take up law into their hands and burn Assam, said Assam Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Barpeta Road during the BJP’s ‘Peace and Progress March’. The road march at Barpeta Road is the second the party organized after the recent violence in Guwahati.

“We have absolutely no issues with protests that are democratic and peaceful. But we will not allow miscreants take up law into their hands and resort to violence in the name of demonstrations,” Sarma said in his address to the people after the peace march.

“We want to reiterate that our Government won’t do anything that goes against the interests of the State. We are steadfast in our mission of seeing Assam among the top-five ranked States in India”, Sarma further said, adding that the government is committing to further accelerating the pace of development.

He also minced no words in slamming former chief ministers Tarun Gogoi and more particularly Prafulla Kumar Mahanta over the chilling secret killings.

He also slammed rumour-mongers for spreading lies over the amended Citizenship Act.

“I want to ask people who are spreading rumours that 1.4 crore Hindu Bangladeshis will come to Assam following the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. I want to ask them if they knew that the population of Hindus in Bangladesh is less than 1.4 crore,” Sarma said.

Assam BJP president and Sorbhog MLA Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Mangaldai Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia, party vice-president Phani Sarma, other party leaders attended today’s road march and public rally.
