Assam: Police arrest college student for spreading fake news on social media

GUWAHATI, Dec 22: Police have arrested a college student from Nagaon for spreading fake news on social media and for inciting other people to take up law into their hands during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (now an Act) at Bokul in Dibrugarh district on Dec 11.

Parashmoni Das had uploaded the image of a female student on popular social networking website Facebook claiming that she was killed in police lathi-charge while in reality she had only suffered minor injuries.

The arrested youth, in his update on Facebook, addressed the college girl a ‘martyr’ besides asking other people to take up law into their hands.

Dibrugarh Police had taken a suo moto case in this regard.

“A youth named Parashmoni Das from Nagaon had spread fake news by claiming that a girl ‘was martyred’ in police lathi-charge at Bokul on Dec 11 without verifying facts. A case was registered at Lahoal Police Station and he was arrested from Nagaon,” Dibrugarh SP Sreejith T said.

He is being interrogated in connection with the case, the Dibrugarh SP added.
