Police monitoring social media; 28 cases registered, 10 arrested for offensive updates: Assam Govt

GUWAHATI, Dec 23: Assam Police have arrested 10 persons for posting offensive updates using the social media during the recent violence in Guwahati. Police have also registered 28 cases in connection with 206 updates that may incite hatred and violence and fuel communal tension.

The Assam Government said on Monday that police is monitoring the social media since Dec 9 while also asking people to refrain from posting or sharing updates that tend to disrupt peace and incite violence.

“Police has been maintaining a close watch on the social media. 206 media updates that tent to incite hatred and violence have been found and 28 cases registered. Police have arrested 10 people in connection with these offensive updates,” Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, adding that five of them were released on bail immediately after their arrest.

“21 others were called along with their parents and released after counselling,” he further said.

“Police have also been able to delete 58 other posts that were not in good taste,” Sarma added.

The Assam Finance Minister also said Assam Police is particularly looking into 25 updates that were posted from outside Assam and the country and that three of them, he said, were posted from the UAE.

Police, Sarma said, have registered a total of 244 cases in total till today and have arrested 393 people.

He also said that the NIA is handling one of the cases registered in connection with the violence in Guwahati.
