Sharjeel Imam sent to 14-days judicial custody

Guwahati: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Guwahati on Friday sent sedition accused, Sharjeel Imam to 14-day judicial custody.

Earlier on February 20, the court had sent him to four days of police custody that was extended to another four days on February 24.

On Friday, Assam Police had produced him before the court after the tenure of his previous custody came to an end. Guwahati city police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that Sharjeel Imam has been sent to judicial custody.

Sharjeel Imam found himself in a soup over his controversial remark to cut off Assam from India that got him arrested.  Facing sedition charges in five states and being on the run for three days since one of his speech videos went viral; Sharjeel was finally arrested by Delhi Police from Jehanabad in Bihar on January 28.

He was brought to Guwahati from New Delhi by a team of Assam Police on 20 February.

Sharjeel, is booked for sedition for his provocative speeches, stoking controversy with his “cut off Assam from India” remark. He has been slapped with charges of sedition and inciting enmity between communities under Sections 124A, 153A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
