Transport officials accused in Lakhimpur bribery case suspended

Lakhimpur: In view of the bribery incident that occurred at Lakhimpur on November 16, which was recorded in a video, two transport department officials, Palash Jyoti Hazarika and Rajen Panging have been suspended by the government.

The officials were seen allegedly demanding 4000 rupees as bribe from truck drivers on a video that went viral on social media platforms.

The recorded video showed the transport department officials discussing about taking 4000 rupees as bribe from each truck. If the drivers failed to pay the amount their trucks were seized.

An official announcement by the department stated that, Chandra Mohan Patowary, State Transport Minister instructed the principal secretary and commissioner, Department of Transport for  the immediate suspension of these Transport officials.They were to be removed under Rule 6 (1) (a) of the Assam Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1964. The minister also instructed the commissioner of transport to investigate the matter and submit a report within 15 days.

Meanwhile, Asomiya Yuba Mancha a local forum has been regularly complaining about the illegal practice in which money is being extorted from truck drivers passing the area and had recently staged a protest against this practice in front of the District Transport Office, North Lakhimpur.
