Trouble for Ripun Bora as Daniel Toppo murder case listed for hearing in High Court

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has listed the hearing of Daniel Topno murder case. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora is an accused in the case.

Topno was murdered by unknown assailants on 26 September, 2000. Topno had contested the 1996 Assembly elections against Bora from Gohpur constituency.

The case was later investigated by CBI and Ripun Bora was made an accused. The Kamrup metro session court acquitted Bora in 2014. The CBI contested this decision at the Gauhati High Court. In 2014 (29th May) CBI filed a criminal revision petition and the Gauhati High Court registered the case on 3rd June. The matter was last listed for hearing on 14 November 2014 and it has now been almost 6 years and no hearing has taken place.

Answering to an RTI query by one Pabitra Hazarika the Gauhati High Court has instructed the registrar to list the Daniel Topno murder case for hearing. This was made known by Dhrupad Kumar Das, Registrar, Gauhati High Court.

The news of listing of the case is surely going to create more trouble for Ripun Bora who has been facing pressure from several fronts to step down as APCC president. Interestingly, during the 2016 Rajya Sabha polls Ripun Bora had stated in his affidavit to the election commission that there was no criminal case against him.

According to sources the RTI activist Hazarika is going to write a letter to the election commission to reject Ripun Bora’s Rajya Sabha membership.
