GUWAHATI: Debabrat Chutia, a civil engineering third-semester student of Assam Engineering College (AEC), Jhalukbari, narrowly escaped death after a fully grown leopard attacked him inside the college campus on Friday evening.

According to Debabrat, he was on a regular evening walk when the leopard attacked him. The leopard prowled on him from behind and injured his forearms and back.

Hearing Debabrat’s screams, local residents and hostel inmates immediately rushed to his help and were able to save him from the big cat. However, the angry group of people started attacking the leopard with sticks and clubs.

The big cat could not survive the attack and died of injuries suffered in the assault by the angry group of people.

The injured student was rushed to hospital following the attack by the leopard.

“I was out for an evening stroll when the leopard attacked me. I have suffered injuries in my face, stomach and hands. Had other inmates and local residents not come to my help, I might have been dead,” Debabrat said.

“Leopards from the nearby forests often enter the AEC hostel premises. We have been asking the authorities to construct walls and make the campus more secure,” hostel inmates of AEC said.
