Guwahati: Diwali is celebrated across all communities of India, creating a homogenous environment of goodwill and happiness. It is a time for both gratitude and gaiety.

To celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali Biswajit Pegu, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) has urged the people to avoid firecrackers and supported the use of earthen lamps (diyas) instead of Chinese lights.

A notice has been issued by The Pollution Control Board Assam that crackers sounding more than 125 decibels are prohibited. The order also directed people to burst firecrackers only between 8pm and 10 pm.

The DC emphasized about the ill effects of bursting firecrackers and said that it pollutes the environment by releasing harmful gases and causes air pollution. Firecrackers contribute to the noise pollution and produce unhealthy garbage as residuals. It also can lead to injuries when children are bursting them without supervision, said Biswajit Pegu.

After the Diwali celebrations, Biswajit Pegu urged the people of Guwahati to join the cleanliness drive organised by the district administration to keep the city clean.
