Guwahati Ropeway might open before historic Modi-Abe meet

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI, Dec 9: Good news for the people of Guwahati. The ropeway connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will be ready for commercial operational very soon; even before the historic Indo-Japan annual meet between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Dec 15.

Construction work of the ropeway is going on in full swing and if sources are to be believed, work is expected to be completed before Dec 15 giving authorities a realistic chance of operationalising it before the much-talked-about Modi-Abe summit.

“The work of the ropeway is nearing final stages. Our main concern was safety and we have completed the safety audit process. Now commercial run can start after a formal inauguration. I think in a few days all other work will be completed and after the inauguration it will be opened for general people,” GMDA CEO Moloy Bora said, adding that people of both Guwahati and North Guwahati will greatly benefit from the ropeway.

“People are very excited about it as it will decrease travel time and make communication easy. More than a thousand people are expected to use the ropeway daily. Another highlight is that it will also connect Umananda river island”, he added.

The 1820-metre-long, two-lane ropeway cabins have a capacity of 32 people including the operator. One can cross the Brahmaputra and reach the other bank in 8-10 minutes.
