Rapido riders protest at Chandmari Playground against suspension

GUWAHATI: Hundreds of Rapido bike-taxi riders protested in AEI Playground, Chandmari against the suspension of Rapido service in Assam.

Transport department on Saturday sealed the Rapido office in Jonali, Guwahati and suspended services of Rapido as they were found to be operating without due permission.

Commuters from Guwahati are also facing serious issues as many people were using Rapido as their daily mode of transport.

“Suddenly Government has imposed a ban on Rapido in Assam when there are thousands of riders earning their livelihood through Rapido. Many unemployed youth including girls are having a part-time income through Rapido. What will happen to us?,” said a Rapido rider from Guwhati.

He added, “Transport department said, the company doesn’t have valid documents if there are no valid documents why is Government taking 5% of GST from every ride. We are also providing free rides to many, a specially-abled person is already receiving free rides from Rapido in Guwahati. If required we are ready to install yellow(commercial) registration number plates. We request the authority and Government to look after the issue.”

“I have been using Rapido service for almost a year. There are many places in the city where bus and public transport do not run and people of those areas used Rapido. This ban will be a serious issue for those people,” said a student.
