Man’s body exhumed after wife alleges murder

Sambalpur (Odisha): The body of a man, who died three months ago, has been exhumed and sent for post-mortem after his wife lodged a police complaint at Odisha’s Bargarh district, alleging that he was killed for political reasons, a police officer said.

Fifty two-year-old Hrudaya Tandi’s remains were retrieved on Thursday in the presence of police and administrative officers to ascertain the exact cause of his death, he said.

“Tandi, a daily wager from Amamunda village in Melchhamunda police station area, had fallen ill on April 18 after allegedly consuming liquor and rushed to Bargarh district headquarters hospital. After he apparently got better, his family members decided to take him home, but Tandi died on the way,” the officer said.

His family then buried him at the village graveyard and no autopsy was conducted at that point of time, he said.

Tandi’s wife on Wednesday lodged a complaint, stating that her husband had died after being made to consume liquor laced with poison, Swapnarani Gochhayat, the inspector in- charge (IIC) of Melchhmunda police station, said.

In the complaint, she also alleged that her husband was killed for “political reasons”, Gochhayat said.

“The woman claimed that she could not file a complaint immediately after Tandi’s death as she was under tremendous mental pressure. Initial investigations suggest that Tandi did not have any political affiliation, but police will be able to furnish more details once the autopsy report arrives,” the IIC added. (PTI)
