AGP snaps ties with BJP, pulls out of Assam Govt

PUBLISHED:

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today (Jan 7) snapped ties with the BJP, ending the honeymoon with its coalition partners and pulling out of the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government amid divergent views over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. AGP president Atul Bora announced in New Delhi about the party’s decision to snap ties after meeting Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

“It was the last meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh as partners of the BJP-led alliance in Assam. But the Home Minister claimed in clear terms that the BJP will try to pass the proposed legislation in Parliament tomorrow. That leaves us with no other option but to end our alliance with BJP,” Atul Bora said in New Delhi, adding that the three AGP ministers in the Assam cabinet will tender their resignation.

The AGP quitting the BJP-led alliance in Assam, however, will have no implication on the government since the BJP and the BPF have 74 members — 61 of the BJP, 12 of BPF and one MLA of Gana Shakti – in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
