Demow Blast | Seven picked up for questioning

Sivasagar Police have picked up seven persons, including two persons from Dimapur, in connection with yesterday’s IED blast that killed two people in Demow. The blast, orchestrated by suspected ULFA(I) militants, took the lives of two persons — Kamal Agarwalla, the owner of the shop where the blast took place, and Anup Gupta, a customer who had come to purchase tin roof plates.

Sivasagar Police picked up Prabhat Khanikar, a linkman of the proscribed militant outfit, Jiarul Hussain of Charaideo, Bedanta Nath, a surrendered ULFA militant, along with two persons from Dimapur in connection with yesterday’s blast.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the senseless killings and said the government has zero tolerance towards militancy and terrorism and that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to book.

“We condemn the blast. It’s an act of cowardice. The perpetrators of the crime will be brought to book,” CM Sonowal said.

The State Government, on the other hand, has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of Kamal Agarwalla and Anup Gupta. Power Minister Topon Kumar Gogoi visited the houses of the two victims and offered his condolences besides announcing about the ex-gratia offered by the Government.

Sivasagar Police hinted the involvement of the ULFA(I) that has been carrying out various subversive activities in the State in the past few months, particularly in eastern Assam districts.

Kamal Agarwalla was reportedly receiving extortion demands in the name of the ULFA(I).
