Justice Ranjan Gogoi set to take over as the new Chief Justice of India

The name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been recommended for the post by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to the government. Justice Gogoi is expected to take oath on October 3. He is slated to retire on November 17, 2019.

Earlier, the law ministry had sent a formal letter to Chief Justice Dipak Misra, seeking the name of his successor. As per convention, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court is appointed the Chief Justice of India and Justice Ranjan Gogoi by virtue of his seniority should be next in line.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was appointed a judge in the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001. He later became the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011. Justice Gogoi was elevated to the top court in April 2012.

Justice Gogoi headed the special bench that is monitoring the updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify citizens and weed out illegally settled foreigners. Justice Ranjan Gogoi was one of the four Supreme Court judges who held the unprecedented press conference in January this year, raising concerns about the administration of the apex court and the independence of judiciary.
