‘Urge Himanta Biswa not to leave State politics’

PUBLISHED:

Amid reports of Assam Finance, Health & PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma being reportedly readied to play a greater role in national politics, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass Sunday (Dec 30) urged him to stay back and not move to the national capital since he has more relevance in Assam and that the State needs him.

Dass made this request in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s presence at a function held at Amingaon in Jalukbari constituency where victorious BJP candidates of the recently-concluded panchayat elections were felicitated.

“We have often been hearing reports in the media that Himanta Biswa Sarma will be leaving Assam to play a greater role in national politics. I agree he can play a very big and important role in New Delhi but the State needs him at this point in time and that he has greater significance in Assam politics and his leaving the State at this crucial time might impact us adversely,” Dass said.

“Considering this, I would like to publicly appeal him not to move to Delhi in case he is considering such a proposal. I would also urge our national leadership not to take him to New Delhi at this point in time but allow him to continue working in Assam,” he added.

Incidentally, sitting Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Bijoya Chakraborty, who also attended the felicitation programme, echoed similar views but said in case the national leadership wants another party leader to contest from Guwahati, she would want him to be Himanta Biswa Sarma.

She also said that in case the national leadership wants the Assam Finance and Health Minister moved to New Delhi, he should be allowed to devote ample time to affairs relating to Assam.
