APSC member sent to 14-day cop custody

GUWAHATI: The special judge's court on Tuesday sent APSC member Basanta Doley, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the cash-for-job scam, to 14-day police custody for further questioning.

Doley, one of the top officials of the commission, was the sixth person to be arrested in the high-profile scam.

After APSC chairman Rakesh Paul was nabbed, Doley ordered his subordinate to burn documents on the pretext of cleaning the office complex. Earlier, Doley had defended his action by saying, "Those papers were useless and I asked them to burn to fog the office premises to drive away mosquitoes." However, half-burnt envelopes with names of candidates appearing for various examinations conducted by the APSC were found from the debris later.

Dibrugarh Police sought his remand saying that his thorough interrogation is vital to dig deep into the case. Senior advocate Bijon Mahajan, appeared as the special public prosecutor in the case.

On the other hand, another arrested APSC member, Samedur Rahman, was produced in the judicial magistrate's court here. Though sources earlier claimed that Samedur might become an 'approver' in the case, he declined to give any statement on Tuesday.

The state cabinet has already moved the governor seeking suspension of APSC chairman Rakesh Paul.
