Assam Accord | High-level committee to implement Clause 6: Centre

The Union cabinet today (Jan 2) approved the formation of a high-level committee to look into implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced in New Delhi. Singh said the committee will also assess quantum of reservation of seats in Assam Legislative Assembly and local bodies for indigenous people of Assam.

Clause 6 of the accord singned in 1985 after the six-year Assam Agitation envisages constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of indigenous communities of Assam.

The Union Home Minister further said that the committee will also look into measures to protect Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam and other measures to protect, preserve and promote cultural, social and linguistic identity and heritage of the indigenous people of Assam.

Singh also announced that the Home Ministry will also look into “outstanding” issues relating to the Bodo Accord and that the Ministry of Culture will come up with a Bodo museum-cum-language and cultural study center along with measures to modernise and upgrade the existing All India Radio (AIR) & Doordarshan Kendras in Kokrajhar.

He also said the cabinet also gave its nod to name a superfast train travelling through BTAD as ‘Aronai Express’.

The AASU, meanwhile, has slammed the Centre over the announcement regarding implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, terming the announcements unfortunate and calling them “poll sops”.
