Blast rocks Guwahati, 4 injured

At least four persons, including a woman were injured, after a blast rocked Fancy Bazaar in Guwahati around noon today (Oct 13). The blast went off at the footpath near the Brahmaputra river front in Fancy Bazaar, damaging a wall besides injuring the four persons.

The injured, identified as Taifuddin Ahmed, Binita Das, Sanku Das and Kalpajyoti Talukdar, were rushed to the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital where they are being attended to by doctors. The blast also damaged a bus that was passing along the road when the explosion took place.

Senior Police officials have already rushed to the spot while forensic and bomb squads were also called to assist investigations although the nature of explosives that was used to trigger the explosion is not known so far.

“We are not sure as of now as to what the nature of explosion is. It might not be a bomb. Forensic teams have been called in and only after they collect samples that we can confirm whether it was a bomb, grenade or other explosive,” a police official said.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.

“We heard a deafening sound. People who were near the place of the blast ran in panic. A bus that was crossing the place bore the brunt of the explosion,” an eyewitness said.

The explosion comes a couple of days before Durga Puja festivities kick off, and exposing the security loopholes that have been put in place for the festive season.
