Eviction drive at Jorabat continues

PUBLISHED:

The eviction drive launched by Kamrup (Metro) district administration along the Jorabat stretch of NH 37 continued for the second day today (Aug 31). The eviction drive was launched following recurring flash-floods at Jorabat since the past few years.

Incidentally, two people had died in flash-floods and landslide at Jorabat earlier this week.

A team of district administration and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials, armed with bulldozers and excavators, demolished illegal structures built on government land on or near the drain.

District administration officials said water-bearing capacity of the drain had decreased following the encroachment that, they said, was one of the reasons for the recurring water-logging and flash floods experienced in Jorabat and its adjoining areas.

The eviction drive will continue till Byrnihaat area following which officials will assess as to what further needs to be done to minimize water-logging.
