HISTORIC DAY: Final NRC draft released in Assam

The Assam Government today (July 30) released the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), including the names of 2,89,83,677 people out of the total 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final draft of the citizens’ register. 40,07,707 names have been kept out of the final draft with the Registrar General of India (RGI) reiterating that people whose names have not been included in final draft can re-apply.

RGI Sailesh, MHA Joint Secretary (Northeast) Satyendra Garg and Assam NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela announced the publication of the final NRC draft at 10 am in Guwahati today (July 30).

“It’s a historic day for Assam. The final NRC draft has been published. Out of the total 3,29,91,384 applicants, names of 2,89,83,677 people have been included in the final draft. People whose names have not been included in can re-apply,” RGI Sailesh said, and added: “The process for making claims and objections will begin on August 30 and continue till September 28. Adequate and ample scope will be given to people for making objections. No genuine Indian citizen should have any fear”.

“People whose names have not been included in this final draft need not worry since they can make claims and objections and re-apply,” Prateek Hajela, State NRC Coordinator, reiterated.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), meanwhile, termed the publication of the final NRC draft historic.

“The NRC final draft has been published as per the spirit of the Assam Accord and under the monitoring of the Supreme Court. We welcome it. It’s a historic day for us. And if the names of any genuine Indian citizens have been left out of the draft, we will provide them full support. But illegal migrants who entered Assam after March 25, 1971, will have to go,” AASU chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyaa told NEWS LIVE.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also welcomed the publication of the draft NRC but warned people against vested-interests who might try to create an atmosphere of fear.

“Some people are unnecessarily trying to create an atmosphere of fear. This is a completely impartial report. No misinformation should be spread. This is a draft and not the final list,” ANI quoted the Home Minister as saying.

The Congress, on the other hand, took exception to the non-inclusion of names of 40 lakh people in the final NRC draft with APCC president Ripun Bora claiming that the figure is “high and unbelievable”.

“Approximately 40 lakh people have been left out. It’s a very high figure, very surprising and quite unbelievable. There are lots of irregularities. We will raise the issue with the government and in Parliament,” Bora said.
