Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn-in as new CJI

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (Oct 3). Justice Gogoi is the first from the Northeast to become Chief Justice of India and will remain in office for a little over 13 months when he retires on Nov 17, 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, a host of central ministers were present at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan when Justice Gogoi, who hails from Dibrugarh, was administered oath of office and secrecy by President Kovind.

Son of former Assam Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi, Justice Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954, and had a chequered career as a jurist after joining the bar and beginning practice at the Gauhati High Court in 1978.

He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2001 and was subsequently transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Sep, 2010. He rose to the position of Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on Feb 12, 2011 before being elevated to the position of a Supreme Court judge in April, 2012.
