Massive security bandobast in Assam for I-Day

PUBLISHED:

Security has been beefed up across Assam in the run-up to the 72nd Independence Day with a multi-layer security mechanism put in place amid a boycott call by the Paresh Baruah-led anti-talks faction of the ULFA, the ULFA(I), and other militant outfits of the Northeast.

Police and security forces have increased frisking and have put up check-points across the State along with deploying more men in khaki at other vital installations, including oil pipelines.

Police have already sounded an alert in the Eastern Assam districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Sonitpur and Biswanath and also in the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) following intelligence inputs of possible militant strikes.

“All measures have been put in place to ensure that the Independence Day celebrations are peaceful. We have increased frisking and deployed forces in vulnerable locations across the State,” Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said.

A multi-layer security has been put in place at the Veterinary College playground in Khanapara, Guwahati, where the central Independence Day function will take place.
