Retd. Army jawan shot dead at Nonoi, Nagaon

PUBLISHED:

In another shocking incident, a retired Army jawan was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants at his house at Nonoi in Nagaon district and in front of his wife and daughter around 6:30 pm today (Oct 22). The assailants came in a motorcycle and first inquired about the deceased, identified as Dwipen Nath, and later shot him from close range. The victim died on the spot, police said.

The assailants, the victim’s wife said, claimed to have come from Karbi Anglong and wanted to discuss something relating to digging of fisheries with the retired Army personnel before shooting him from close range.

“There were two persons. They came and inquired about my husband and said they came from Karbi Anglong and wanted to discuss something relating to digging of fisheries. Since he was not at home, the two miscreants said they would come back after finishing some errands,” Dwipen Nath’s wife said.

“When my husband returned, the duo came back and oen of them started discussing something with him. My husband seems disinterested in continuing the conversation and it was after he told the person to come back tomorrow that he took out a firearm and shot two rounds of bullets at my husband,” she added.

Senior police officials arrived at the scene and have begun investigations although the two assailants, who escaped under the cover of darkness, are still on the run.

“It’s too early to say but prima facie, it appears there is a commercial and financial angle to the incident that took place around 6:30 pm today. We have picked up some clues but can’t divulge much for the sake of investigations,” Nagaon SP Shankar Brata Raimedhi told News Live.
