Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a billion Indians in celebrating the fourth International Yoga Day and said yoga is ancient yet modern and that it acts as a force in unifying the world as he performed various asanas at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Dressed in a white T-shirt and a pair of white trousers with an Assamese ‘Gamosa’ around his neck, PM Modi performed breathing exercises along with several thousand yoga enthusiasts.

“Instead of dividing and furthering suffering, Yoga assimilates and heals,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on twitter and added: “In a world where non-communicable diseases, stress and lifestyle related ailments are rising, Yoga can play a central role in mitigating these diseases to create a healthy mind and body.”

Lakhs of people across India and other parts of the world took to yoga workouts today to celebrate the 4th International Yoga Day.

In Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, other ministers, MLAs, government and police officials along with other people performed various asanas to celebrate the day.

The central International Yoga Day in Assam was held at the Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon town.

“Yoga has become a mass movement for wellness and spirituality by reviving humanity’s connect with nature. This has been made more special by the youth adopting Yoga and becoming its global brand ambassadors,” Sonowal stated.

“When sense are stilled, when mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not – then, say the wise, is reached the highest stage. This steady control of senses & mind is defined as yoga,” Finance and Health Minister Sarma tweeted quoting from the Kathopanishad.

Union Minister Vijay Goel also took part in the yoga celebrations in Guwahati today (June 21) morning.
