PUBLISHED:

England defeated India by 31 runs in the first test at Edgbaston and go 1-0 up in the 5-match series. Needing 84 runs to draw first blood against the hosts with five wickets in hand at the start of play on Day 4, the visitors were bundled out for 162 runs.

India lost Dinesh Karthik’s wicket after adding just two runs to the team total and suffered the biggest setback following the loss of the wicket of captain Virat Kohli who was adjudged leg before for 51. Despite some resistance from Hardik Pandya (31) and Ishant Sharma (11), the visitors fell 32 runs short of the target.

India had earlier dismissed England for 180 runs in their second innings. All-rounder Sam Curran made a 65-ball 63 to save the hosts from being dismissed for an even lower total and set up a somewhat bigger target.
