FIFA World Cup 2018: Defending champions Germany face Sweden in must-win clash

PUBLISHED:

Defending champions Germany will face Sweden in a must-win tie in Group F to remain in the competition after having lost their inaugural match against Mexico 0-1. The match begins at 11:30 IST.

The 2014 champions slumped to a shock defeat at the hands of the Mexicans with PSV Eindhoven winger Hirving Lozano’s 35th minute winner giving the North American side a 1-0 victory over Joachim Low’s world champions.

Sweden, on the other hand, are top of the group after having beaten Korea by a solitary goal in their inaugural tie at Nizhny Novgorod on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the other matches of the day Belgium will look to book their place in the last 16 when they face Tunisia at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow in the first match of the day while Korea will face a resurgent Mexico in the second tie at Rostov-on-Don.

Earlier on Friday, five-time champions Brazil registered their first victory at Russia as they defeated Costa Rica 2-0, thanks to injury-time goals from Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.

Nigeria thumped Iceland 2-0 at the Volgograd Arena to give Argentina — anihilated 3-0 by Croatia on Thursday night — some hopes of making it to the knockout stage.

Switzerland, who had held Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their first match of the world cup in Russia, came from a goal behind to beat Serbia 2-1 in their second Group E clash and inch closer to a place in the last-16 stage.
