India lose Test series but Virat shines

PUBLISHED:

India lost the ongoing 5-match Test series against England after losing the fourth Test at Southampton on Sunday by 60 runs. The hosts took an unassailable 3-1 lead with a match to go, as the visitors, chasing 245 runs for victory, squandered a very good opportunity to square the series and take it to a decider. However, as most Indian batters faltered in the swinging conditions, skipper Virat Kohli stood out from the rest.

Not only has he emerged as the leading run scorer in the series, he added another record to his name by becoming the first Indian to reach 4,000 Test runs as captain.

Former skipper MS Dhoni, who led India in 60 Tests scoring five centuries and 24 fifties, is second in the list with 3,454 runs in the longer format of the game. Sunil Gavaskar is third in the chart with 3,449 runs as Test captain.

Kohli also reached two other milestones: reaching 6,000 runs in Tests and 1,500 against England during the Southampton Test.

India will play for pride in the fifth and final test at the Oval from Sep 7 and aim to end the series on a high.
