Manchester United sack Mourinho

PUBLISHED:

Struggling Premier League giants Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager after a disastrous season that leaves the former champions 19 points adrift league leaders Liverpool culminating with their humiliating 3-1 loss to the table-toppers on Sunday.

“A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” Manchester United said in a statement.

A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

The 55-year-old former Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter boss joined in May 2016 but failed to show his earlier charisma. Despite taking United to League Cup and Europa League titles, he failed to win the Premier League with the Reds.

He is also said to have drawn criticism from several players, more particularly World Cup winning French midfielder Paul Pogba, with his style of management. Pogba, incidentally, was an unused substitute against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

United said it will appoint a caretaker-manager before they face Cardiff City on Dec 22 but it will not be assistant manager Michael Carrick or academy boss Nicky Butt. The candidate will also not be former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger although the club says he will be drawn from outside the club.
