Assam: Diphu Medical College formally inaugurated, gets MCI permission

GUWAHATI: Amid Coronavirus crisis across the country, Diphu Medical College and Hospital in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district was formally inaugurated on Wednesday. Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognised Diphu Medical College with an intake of 100 MBBS students.

Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of Diphu Medical College in the hill district of the state on January 19, 2011.

“Amidst #COVID19outbreak threats and atmosphere of restraint,some good news for us to chin up.

MCI has recognised Diphu Medical College with an intake of 100 students.Heartening that journey of our 7th medical college of Assam is all set to begin with state of art infrastructure,” Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted. 

Though outpatient clinic department (OPD) at Diphu Medical College and Hospital started functioning with the approval of MCI from November 15, 2019, the formal recognition of MCI has brought smiles to the thousands of residents of Karbi Anglong district. There are 44 senior and junior doctors, 58 professors have been appointed to the medical college and hospital. On the other hand, 205 nurses, 87 third grade employees are currently working at Diphu Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile Tuliram Ronghang, chief executive member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council said, “Diphu Medical College and Hospital has got permission from MCI and for that credit goes to finance and health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
