Assam Police registers FIR against former JNU student Sharjeel Imam

GUWAHATI: Assam Police has registered a case against Shaheen Bagh protest mastermind and former JNU student Sharjeel Imam who made a controversial statement saying that Assam should be cut off from the rest of India.

Police lodged an FIR against former JNUSU member and Shaheen Bagh Coordination committee chief Sharjeel for his speech and inter alia commission of offence u/s 13 (1)/18 of the UA(P)ACT read with section 153 A, 153 B and  124 A IPC at Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station. 

Earlier, Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision of the State government to register a case against Sharjeel Imam.

“State government has taken cognizance of this seditious statement. This statement is aimed to create a law and order situation in the state of Assam. So, on this statement, state government has decided to register a case against this particular individual,” Dr. Sarma stated in a press meet in Guwahati today.

Sharjeel Imam reportedly made the controversial statement at a protest saying, “Do you know what is happening to Assamese Muslims? NRC is already applied there. They have been put in detention centres. We may come to know that in 6-8 months all Bengalis have been killed – Hindu or Muslim. If we want to help Assam, then we will have to stop the way to Assam for the Indian Army and other supplies.”
