Assam: Rangia girl donates nearly Rs 2 lakh to state Covid-19 relief fund

GUWAHATI: A college student of Rangia under Kamrup district in Assam has donated Rs 1.93 lakh kept in her bank account by parents to the state government amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Rima Ghosh, a student of Rangia College  donated the amount to Assam Arogya Nidhi to support the state government in its battle against Coronavirus.

She recently handed over the cheque to Assam irrigation minister Bhabesh Kalita. Rima said her parents were saving the money for her marriage, but she decided to donate the amount due to the threat arising from the virus outbreak, reports India Today.

“The entire world is now fighting against the Coronavirus and many people in our country are also infected. After consulting with my father, I decided to donate the amount to the state government,” she said.

The initiative of Rima has been widely lauded by the different sections of the society.

Till 9.35 PM on April 5, 8054 people of the state have contributed a total amount of Rs. 17,37,09,641.73 to Assam Arogya Nidhi.

Assam has reported 26 positive cases for COVID-19 so far.

Addressing a press meet on Monday Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We have completed 2,000 tests in the five ICMR-accredited labs in Assam so far. Out of them 1,809 have been negative, 26 positive while results of 165 are awaited.”

Sarma also made some important announcements during the press meet including—ILP-type entry permits (on temporary basis) for people who come to Assam once the lockdown ends, extension of 50 lakh medical insurance scheme to Doctors and nursing staff of private hospitals who have entered into an MoU with Assam Government.

The Assam Government also decided to file criminal case against the attendees of Tablighi Jamaat of Nizamuddin Markaz who are still hiding.
