Breaking: Lockdown declared in Assam

GUWAHATI: In a move to shield Assam from Coronavirus, Assam government has ordered lockdown in the state. The lockdown will begin from 6 PM tomorrow.

The lockdown will continue till March 31.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision.

Pharmacies, groceries, banks and oil depots will remain open during the period.

Inter-state transport will remain suspended during the lockdown. On the other hand, churches, temples, mosques or other places of worship will have to close the doors. Only three people will be able to attend the religious places to perform the daily rituals.

“Violations of lockdown will lead to maximum 2 years of imprisonment,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam is the fourth northeastern state to declare a lockdown in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram have already declared lockdown though no positive case has been reported from the region.
