GUWAHATI, Jan 10: Amid the ongoing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the provisions of the Act came into effect from today following a gazette notification issued by the Union Home Ministry.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of the section 1 of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (47 of 2019), the Central government hereby appoints the 10th day of January, 2020, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the MHA notification said.
The Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by Parliament on Dec 11 last year and it became a law after receiving the President’s assent on Dec 14.
