Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Wednesday morning granted four-week time to the Centre to reply to the 144-odd petitions challenging the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA.
The court made it clear that it would not put the law on hold without hearing the centre.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde was hearing a batch of pleas challenging the validity of CAA, including those filed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.
Assam, Tripura Accords and changes in citizenship will be considered separately. The Supreme Court has also asked for a list of cases from these two states.
The Supreme Court said the petitions challenging CAA will be heard by five-judge bench. (Inputs from India Today)
