Guwahati: The city of Guwahati, too, came to a standstill on Sunday along with the rest of the country as residents observed ‘Janta Curfew’ to put the brakes on the spread of Coronavirus.
All major roads including the Guwahati-Shillong road(GS Road), Fancy Bazar, Aathgaon, Kalapahar, Maligaon etc. remained deserted with only a few vehicles providing essential services were seen moving throughout the day.
Shopping malls, grocery stores, fish markets and small shops remained closed. Pharmacies, however, remained open. Essential services like ambulances, water supply etc. continued to operate.
At exactly 5 PM residents in Guwahati blew conch shells, beat drums and utensils, played cymbals and clapped hands responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to show gratitude towards the real heroes of our country. Some even lit fire crackers.
“We have three mandirs and 1 masjid in our locality. This was the first time when I heard the namaz and the playing of conch shells along with the temple bells ringing at the same time. This was mesmerizing. People showed the actual meaning of unity and this is true spirit of our country. By following this attitude we can stand together and fight against every odds,” said a resident of Fancy Bazar in Guwahati.
