Guwahati: Diphu district court has convicted 12 accused in the infamous Jhankar Saikia lynching case which took place in 2013 at Diphu in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.
Out of total 16 accused, court has acquitted 4 persons including two police men.
Jhankar saikia, a college student was mercilessly killed in-front of his father by a group of auto-rickshaw drivers on June 25,2013. The mob beat-up Jhankar and his father Hiren Saikia when they refused to pay Rs. 10 more than the original fare of Rs. 20. The critically injured student was shifted to a private hospital at Diphu where he succumbed to his injuries on July 1, 2013.
“Twelve accused have been found guilty under section 147, 341, 323, 302 and 149 of the IPC. The quantum of punishment will be announced by the court on February 28,” Special Public Prosecutor Durga Prasad Jaiswal said.
“Those who are acquitted by the court are Ramesh Chandra Nath, Havildar Harun Bora, Sarthe Bey and Dilip Teron,” Jaiswal added.
Meanwhile, Jhankar’s father Hiren Saikia has expressed his happiness after the judgement.
“I am happy today. I had firm belief that one day we would get justice,” Saikia said.
