GUWAHATI: “Assam government has directed to drop the ‘Maktab’ word from the names of 63 schools,” said Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today.

Addressing a press meet at State Secretariat in Guwahati, Dr. Sarma said, “Since there is no Maktabi education system now, the word ‘Maktab’ will be dropped from the names of the schools. Students of these schools had to face many problems as there is a notion that religious education is imparted there.”

Minister Sarma also told newsmen that the work to convert Madrasas and Sanskrit Tols to government schools will begin after the State Budget is tabled.
