Guwahati: Finally the fight for justice has come to an end. Justice was delivered to Nirbhaya after seven years as four convicts— Mukesh Singh (32) Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) – were hanged at 5:30 am in Tihar Jail today.

On December 16, 2012, Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped and murdered by six men. Out of the six men, one was a minor and another one committed suicide while he was in Jail.

After the incident came to light, a legal battle that lasted for over 7 years commenced in the court. The family was supported by the entire nation, but a woman who stood next to Nirbhaya’s mother throughout this journey was Seema Khuswaha.

Seema Khuswaha stood against all the odds and fought like a warrior for justice all these 7 years starting from day 1. She won the legal battle with utmost dignity and showed the world what is women empowerment is all about.

Seema Kushwaha expressed her satisfaction on Friday morning after the four convicts in the case were hanged at Tihar jail. According to her, justice has been delayed, but it has been served.

Seema did not lose sight of her goal even as her opponent AP Singh used several petty arguments to delay the execution of the four rapists.

Speaking to the media Seema Kushwaha said, “The way they had convicted the heinous crime, even animals don’t do such crimes. Since that day, I had decided that I will bring justice to her. I am satisfied that I accomplished what I had decided. They received the maximum punishment that they should have been received.”  She further added, “It would have been a happy day if we would have been able to save Nirbhaya. Today, I am satisfied that justice has been served.”

Talking about the horrific incident Seema remembers the day of the incident and that she was left completely shaken. She recalled that she was preparing for her IAS at that time and the other girls in her hostel at Mukherjee Nagar were called back by their parent’s right after the crime had been committed.

Seema also recounted her first meeting with Asha Devi and how she cried later thinking about the severity of the crime that was committed. She belives that the brutality with which the gang-rape and murder had been committed it showed that the perpetrators did not deserve leniency.

Asha Devi, Badrinath Singh and Seema Kushwaha show victory sign after the convicts were hanged till death after a 7-year-long legal battle.

Talking about Seema, she is a well-known lawyer who completed her education from Delhi University. A native of Etawa, Uttar Pradesh, Seema is working in close coordination with a trust which was started in Nirbhaya’s name.
